The Cairns giant black marlin season was established in the 1970's after the first 1000lb black marlin was weighed by angler Richard Obach fishing with Captain George Bransford in 1966. Since then, more black marlin have been caught (and released) in the waters off Cairns than anywhere else in the world!

Every year in September, these beautiful giant fish return to the warm waters off Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. The biggest of the females can measure more than 13 feet long and up to and over 454kg (1000lbs) in weight. And with the large female fish come a bevy of smaller males to about 170kg (350lbs).

The peak season for giant black marlin fishing in Cairns is between September and December each year. This is your best opportunity to experience the very best in Australian marlin fishing.

KEKOA recommends live-aboard fishing charters between 3 and 10 days in duration. We can comfortably cater for groups of up to four anglers onboard and mother ships are available upon request.

If you are an experienced marlin fisherman (or woman!), or a complete novice, Cairns should be you number 1 option and destination on your list of your next big game fishing adventure!

LIGHT TACKLE Black Marlin Fishing in Townsville

North Queensland also offers some fantastic fishing to light tackle anglers particularly in the colder months from July to September in Townsville. Cape Bowling Green off Townsville has many times been classed as one of the premier light tackle marlin fishing destinations in the world because of the juvenile black marlin and sailfish that congregate here. The fish are drawn to the area by the huge schools of bait who come in turn because of the nutrients that feed out of the Burdekin River. And they come in numbers with the best days recorded being 32 and 36 tags!

The Cape provides a good anchorage close to the fishing and so extended charters are a great way to experience the fishing. Day trips out of Townsville for up to 7 anglers are also an option.

OUR SKIPPER: Captain Luke Fallon

Capt. Luke Fallon has been at the helm of KEKOA for 7 years and is a 27 year veteran of big game fishing and the Cairns Marlin Fishing Season. He is one of the most respected and well-known charter boat skippers operating in Australia. Luke has been successful in many of the big game fishing tournaments along the coast from Lizard Island to Bermagui and some of his highlights include catching 9 giant black marlin in a single day.

Luke’s gamefishing resume includes being at the helm of The Warrigal, Reef Hunter, Reel Easy 2,5 years on the Assegai and now 8 years on the KEKOA (starting with the KEKOA 47 in 2006).

Throughout these times Luke has competed and been successful in many of the big game fishing tournaments along the coast from Lizard Island to Bermagui. Some of Luke’s highlights have been catching 9 giant black marlin in a single day heavy tackle fishing, and a career that has landed many fish close to and above 1000lbs, the biggest being a staggering 1298lbs.

Meanwhile, in the marlin off-season, Luke has spent many years guiding for barramundi – his 2nd love. A metre plus barra is the inshore version of a grander marlin. Another of Luke’s fishing highlights is 9 barra over a metre at Crocodile Creek in a single session including an amazing 5 fish each measuring over 120cm!!

A new dimension has been added to the game fishing charter vessels of old with O’Brien Boats designing and producing a vessel that delivers a world class fishing experience as well as comfortably accommodating luxurious personal charters.

KEKOA is also well equipped for all fishing styles and possibilities with an array of the highest quality fishing tackle – including Cairns marlin fishing for Giant Black Marlin – as well as two fully custom-made tenders perfect for inshore and estuary fishing.

The KEKOA Experience

Our cook/hostess Kelly offers our guests great meals that include the best local seafood and quality Australian beef. We trust you'll enjoy the menu - and you will not go home hungry. Kelly is also an avid photographer and captures some truly awesome still photographs: barramundi jump shots from the tender or jumping marlin action photos from the reef. She is regularly published in industry publications such as BlueWater Boats & Sport Fishing magazine – including these Cairns marlin fishing cover shots to the left.

Our guests leave not only with some great memories of a fantastic trip, but some great video and photographic evidence as well all copied for you onto a take home DVD – so you’ll enjoy the memories of your trip for years to come.
